How AI Moves Scienceš§¬
AlphaFold 3 is an AI for Science story worth appreciating.
Hello Everyone,
I think we need to take a moment to appreciate what Generative AI might do for science and innovation, what it has done for biology, medicine and biotechnology already!
Did Google know what it was doing when it acquired DeepMind? What a difference ten years and a bit of foresight can make, eh. Google paid $400 million to buy London-based artificial intelligence company DeepMind, in 2014.
Fast forward to 2024, 1.8M+ researchers have used @GoogleDeepMindās AlphaFold protein predictions in their work on vaccine development, cancer treatment + more. AlphaFold 3 is the latest breakthrough, predicting the structures + interactions of all of lifeās molecules with unprecedented accuracy. Weāre sharing access to these capabilities through AlphaFold Server to enable other scientific discoveries.
If Iām a self-proclaimed emerging tech analyst, Iād be crazy not to give Alphabet some credit here. If our topic of this Newsletter is the Machine Economy, something I think is or will be real, this is pretty incredible.
Google had a blowout Q1 Earnings, slapped on a dividend, had a huge buyback, and even has a morale crisis inside of the company, but for Science, itās a big win.
AlphaFold 3 is here.
YouTube noticeably dramatizes everything:
Alphabet is stuck somewhere between the past and the future, a Gemini in all things. One AI empowered comment form their lats internal meeting read: āDespite the companyās stellar performance and record earnings, many Googlers have not received meaningful compensation increasesā a top-rated employee question read.
Isometric Labs was itself incorporated on February 4, 2021 and announced on November 5, 2021.Isomorphic Labs was founded by Demis Hassabis. Who nows leads the merge of Google Brain and GDM.
Announcing AlphaFold 3: is their state-of-the-art AI model for predicting the structure and interactions of all lifeās molecules.
In 2020, the company made a significant advance in molecular biology by using AI to successfully predict the behaviour of microscopic proteins.
With the latest incarnation of AlphaFold, researchers at DeepMind and sister company Isomorphic Labsāboth overseen by cofounder Demis Hassabisāhave mapped the behaviour for all of lifeās molecules, including human DNA.
