Software Languages on the Rise
Developer training platform CodingDojo scoured job ads on careers website Indeed to find out which programming languages are in highest demand in 2022.
It found that Python, Java, SQL and JavaScript appeared the most frequently in developer job ads, each appearing in more than 50,000 listings on Indeed.
All four saw a significant jump in demand compared to 2020-2021, said CodingDojo.
The Return of Java - on the Rise?
The programming language in most demand, according to the data analysed by Coding Dojo, is Java. Widely used in Android mobile apps, desktop applications, smart TVs and elsewhere, the Java programming language was found in more than 80,000 active jobs listings on Indeed.

The findings indicate that Java – a legacy technology by all accounts – is making something of a comeback after its popularity waned slightly in 2020 and 2021, pushed down the rankings by Python, which has seen steady growth in popularity in recent years.
What can we Learn from Jobs Data of 2021 for Programming Languages?
For its research, Coding Dojo scours jobs listing site Indeed. The company looks at what languages appear most in job descriptions and compares their prevalence with previous years to identify trends that could give you an advantage.
One interest way to look at it is just to see which language was listed the most!
Python retained its lead in 2021 as the language which cropped up in the most (~70,500) job descriptions. Rounding out the top five is SQL (~69,000), Java (~59,000), R (~56,000), and Visual Basic (~54,000).
The 2021 Laggards
JavaScript had a rough year, dropping to sixth place with around 50,000 job descriptions mentioning the language.
The demand for almost all languages dropped when compared to 2020 (when most of the languages observed peaked.)
For example, Python – despite retaining its overall lead – dropped from around 74,000 jobs in 2020 to around 70,500 in 2021.
However, the demand for most languages remained above their pre-2020 levels.
Across all the languages reviewed by Coding Dojo, only demand for Visual Basic and R grew in 2021 compared to 2020. That was at the aforementioned expense of JavaScript; which got shunted down the rankings.
JavaScript and Python demand was down last year.
And 2022 so far?
CodingDojo found that the tables had turned in 2022: In 2020 and 2021, Python was the programming language that appeared most frequently on Indeed, but the sharp growth of Java over the past year had pushed Python into second place.
