Hello Everyone,
As I pivot my publications in 2024 to topics that I’m more focused on as an analyst, researcher, curator and speculate upon - this Newsletter gets a new focus:
Automation
Future of Work
Future of Code and Software Engineer
How Coders and other white-collar professionals adopt AI
The Human-AI interface
Generative AI in Science
The evolution of VR (Metaverse) and the Brain Computer Interface (BCI)
The Machine Economy is when AI becomes more native, integrated, interoperable and mainstream and a world where large language models and small language models can work together through networks of proprietary data to delivery not only more agency, but more collective intelligence!
The Machine Economy is process by which our cities becomes smarter, where IoT, ambient computing, robotics and AI all evolve and science, E-commerce, transportation and consumption radically shift.
Other Topics:
Hacker News type topics like layoffs in Technology.
Technology in its relationship to Geopolitics
Generational impacts of Technology adoption
Impact of Generative AI interacting with other macro trends (e.g. demographic pyramid inversion winter)
GenZ and Alpha cohorts relationship with new technologies
As AI redefines roles across industries, it’s crucial to understand its implications for the future of work.

The 2023 to 2025 period has some pretty wacky projections for society ahead:

This Newsletter was formerly called Data Science Central, where I dealt with Hacker News type articles. While I have other publications that focus on specific aspects of emerging tech like robotics, quantum computing, AI startups, BigTech and AI, and AI itself, I wanted another place also for essays that I cannot just put anywhere else. Also to ask some of the big questions I’ve been pondering:
How will white-collars jobs change?
How will Generative AI impact innovation, entrepreneurship and R&D itself
How will Generative AI and an academic AGI change Science itself?
How are academics, lawyers, doctors, teachers and scientists using AI?
How will Generative AI change education, healthcare and biotechnology?
How is AI impacting geopolitical power and national sovereignty, military tactics and geopolitical borders?
So just to give you an idea what to expect around here. I’m also open to suggests to hit reply if you have requests. Potentially AI’s impact in industries like healthcare and education might go here as well.

Among many others. The thing is in early 2024 we are seeing job layoffs due to further investments in AI and the impact of AI already on some industries within large companies like Google, Amazon and Microsoft.
The relationship of AI adoption and shareholder value stock performance in BigTech is also notable. Massive layoffs for more operational efficiency to further Generative AI in R&D is now a notable trend at Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Salesforce and others.
More than 20,000 tech employees have already lost jobs so far in 2024, according to tracker layoffs.fyi.
Google powered Gemini Ultra and a host of specialized Ad-tech that’s AI mediated means also less need for advertising and sales roles. The role of early career software engineers is also changing due to rapid adoption of A.I. in software engineering. M&A and consolidation also changes entire industries like the cuts in gaming after Microsoft’s mega acquisition of Activision.
The Machine Economy Proper to me begins around 2028 and could herald a more rapid pace of automation, AI disruption and white collar impact of AI on jobs, tasks with new kinds of quantum computing, AI agents and so forth.
Humans have always been adaptable but it’s going to get more difficult to adapt to the rapid period of changes that might have profound economic impacts on global growth in a period of geopolitical tension. This period will have some dystopian elements as well as society and nation states grabble for power and dominance with all of these “emerging technologies”. That’s the story I’ll be increasingly focused on coming at it from different angles.
What an amazing name, Michael!!! Thanks for linking my work!!! Educating AI is definitely of a similar mind. More soon!
Very excited about the future of work!
Gemini Ultra will consume an entire weekend of prompt side-by-sides, and other explorations.
With the Big Boys coming (GPT5, Ultra) and Open Source roaring (Mistral) we have fun months ahead.
